How? It takes a relatively simple (and empowering) idea, positive reinforcement and developing a mindset of abundance and commodifies it as something metaphysical and new-agey. It reinforces passivity through the idea if I will it it will come - which is not reality based.

Like, you will notice the oppurtunities of what you focus on and then go for it. Thats what i got out of it.. and new age? They say right in the beginning that its an ancient secret.

I see you wrote new-age with an y at the end.. but, is that such a bad thing if it is? I actually like those kind of philosophys or at least i did. But after a while, its like they all are describing the same thing just with different words.

The Secret, IMO, is limited to anecdotal evidence that it works and has no basis in objective reality. Of course it can shape your belief system, but this requires you to have faith that The Secret is correct in order to change that belief system. The biggest problem that I have with it is that it's design mitigates the blame for lack of success and takes some credit for an individuals success.
Although I don't have one, I like the idea of a vision board. Not the metaphysical reason for having one, but more for maintaining focus on goals whether it is consciously or subconsciously. However, if someone thinks it helps them achieve and they are pursuing their goals then who am I to stop them.

It is and it isn't. I recommend "The 7 Laws of Magical Thinking" regarding this. tl;dr any belief system that helps you take action thinking luck is on your side is superior to a more grounded belief system that encourages inertia

Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle by Tom Venuto. Not only will it help you get in shape pretty quickly, he talks about goal setting and the right frames for being successful in and out of the health realm. No need to follow everything in there unless you are competing in some tournament, but a lot of good nuggets to get you in good shape and thinking right.

Also - just curious what you guys think of The Rational Male. That was an old school book that a lot of PUA relied on. I agree with everyone else on The Like Switch. Also, Influence by Robert Cialdini is a similar book.

I haven't read it, but I'd like to know if the author gives a clear definition of "rationality" It is quite large and expansive: "The Rational Male is a rational and pragmatic approach to intergender dynamics and the social and psychological underpinnings of intergender relations. The book is the compiled, ten-year core writing of author/blogger Rollo Tomassi from therationalmale.com."

Lots of interesting topics, etc. Red vs Blue pill type material.

It's too whimsy for my liking. In principle I appreciate a mindset of abundance, I just think The Secret turns it into something more mystical only to sell itself.

There's nothing like playing the field, books will only get you so far, they are no substitute for experience.
