I decided I'll try to go and do some of my work at a cafe whenever I can. I've got flex time on a few days where I can work from home, so no harm done doing it in a place where I'm more likely to have approach opportunities.
I walked into the cafe two days ago, and saw a cute girl sitting at one of the tables. A fairly long table actually meant to seat several people. The approach didn't look that good since I didn't really have anything to open with, and if I walk over and sit down with her, it makes the intention too clear, but I decided to go for the second option anyway.
I got a bagel and a coffee since I was a bit hungry, walked over, and asked if I can join her. She was working on something on her laptop, and surprisingly, she said yes. Instead of sitting right across from her, I figured it'd be better sitting staggered, so I sit on the side across from her, but staggered one seat, as I devour my bagel and have my coffee.

I'm also on an app to learn Japanese, and am talking to a language partner in Japan. She just sent me a message of "do well at work" so I sent her back a message "ganbatte" (which is Japanese for "do your best" used as a greeting for work or any upcoming task). I suspect this target could be Japanese, so I make sure to speak loudly into my phone.
While we're working there, some guy shows up to fix the ATM at the coffee shop. It's an ATM, with very few button options, but all I keep hearing from the direction is "beep beep beep beep... ". The noise of button pressing again and again and again, and this goes on for almost 5 minutes.
I take advantage of the situational opportunity. I notice the girl has headphone, so if I talk to her she might need to take them off first to hear me. Instead I have a notepad so I jot down
"It sounds like
he is playing
a video game
--------->"
and pass it over to her. She reads it and laughs, so I know I'm in.
She asks me if I speak Japanese and I tell her about the fact I'm learning a little bit for a potential trip there. She tells me she's from Japan (as suspected), and I finally have a story ready for one such case.
I tell her about my visit in Japan, and how I accidentally tried to order tiger meat instead of chicken meat (the words are similar in Japanese). Works like a charm and she is laughing.
Asking what she is working on, turns out she wants to become a Japanese teacher.
Me: "I'll be your first student then, are you a good teacher?"
Her: "Yes I am! Oh good I have my first student"
I tell her I can be her English teacher then, seeing as how she is studying English here in Canada
I talk to her about my potential trip, and she happens to be from one of the cities I want to visit, so I also tell her we can talk about that, and I use that chance to ask for her contact.
Me: "Do you have Instagram, we can chat there?"
Her: "Oh yeah, sure" (takes out her phone)
Me: "Oh actually, do you have whatsapp? that is better"
We exchange whatsapp contact details.
We talk a bit more, then I take my notepad, draw a 3x3 grid on it, and we play tic tac toe for a bit. I found this to be a cute little thing to do sometimes, and some girls are floored when you keep winning (For the best ttt strategy, check this out xkcd.com/832/). She is surprisingly impressed at my superior tic tac toe strategy. I also tell her about some cool places to visit in the city, and close by in this province.
Surprisingly she is taking evening classes and doesn't have much to do during the day so that is why she is there at the coffee shop. I think that will be a bit harder to navigate around but we will see.
While I'm feeling the conversation is on a high, and she is laughing when I win our games, and is very appreciative of my knowledge of places to visit, I tell her I have to meet a coworker to help them fix something, and leave.
Some good lessons I took from the approach:
- Had a good situational opener
- Had a good story to go straight into
- Made a subtle escalation when asking for contact details, instead of whatsapp right away, bait and switch from Instagram. Don't know if that was a thing, but might test that a bit more
This #close felt a bit more solid than previous ones, so I look forward to exploring it, and her body, more
